I was talking with a relative and they said that they really wanted either a lemon or chocolate cake. I decided to make them a lemon cake in celebration for their retirement. So, I found this recipe from PlatedCravings website. Read till the end to see how the cake turned out and my commentary.

I put the base of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. These ingredients include flour, baking powder, and salt. Then I set it aside. I did not add any lemon zest. The instructions wanted me to add lemon zest. I set it aside.

In the mixing bowl, I mixed together butter and sugar for about 10 minutes. I also added eggs, butter, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. Furthermore, it wanted me to add buttermilk. The recipe gave me some instructions on how to make a substitute for buttermilk. They told me to combine 1/2 cup of milk and 1.5 tsp of lemon juice. I added some of the flour mix and buttermilk mixture. Mixed it, then added more of the flour mix and buttermilk. Once through with mixing I ended up, pouring everything in a pan, and putting it in the oven on 350 for about an hour.

This is how the cake turned out. I wanted to make sure that it was done so I left it in for about an hour. Afterward, I knew the next step was to make the icing. The recipe has instructions for making the icing. It includes: 1 tsp of lemon juice, milk, and powdered sugar. I poured it on the cake and it turned out like this…

The icing turned out looking glazed-like. When I tasted the cake, it wasn’t too sweet and the cake tasted like a normal cake. You really could not tell that I put lemon inside the cake. It made me think that maybe I should have added the lemon zest. Furthermore, the icing did not turn out how I wanted it to turn out. I wanted it to be thicker, instead it came out runny, but eventually it stuck to the cake. It was also unintentional to become a glazed icing. I think I also might have confused the icing instructions with the lemon syrup instructions.
